Van Conversion Weight of Tanks

#vanlife #vanbuild bathroom
It's an issue!  Water weighs over 8 lbs per gallon.  Our 46 gallon fresh water tank will weigh 380 pounds when it's full. (When determining water weight, remember not to total up the gallons of all of your tanks, as they will not be full at the same time.)

The added weight will cause a few problems:
1) It could slow us down.
2) It will hurt our gas mileage.
3) We will have to balance the weight in the build.

So, why did we choose large tanks?  Some of the reasons are here, but to address the above problems, we'll look at the pros and cons.

1) It potentially will slow us down, but we aren't Smokey and the Bandit (some of ya'll will get that). The whole point of van life is to change the pace of life, not stress over schedules.  The larger tanks will allow us to spend more time traveling and boondocking (read: having fun) rather than worrying about getting to our next dump stop.
2) Have you seen the cost of dumping?  At $20- 25 a pop in some places, the cost can really add up.  So, six to one; half a dozen the other.
3) Not a prob, Bob!  Our kitchen is pretty heavy and we will have the lithium batteries on the opposite side of the water tanks.

Ask your self these questions before choosing your tank sizes.
